Mammals
Terrestial mammals are introduced predators common elsewhere in the Sounds, some residents contribute to pest control with their own trapping activities. Long-tailed bat recorded in 1996 at Waterfall Bay but has not been seen elsewhere in the area since the 1960’s. Forest & Bird Society has a bat monitoring programme to find remnants of this once common mammal

Seals can seen lounging on the rocks at the headlands and may be in large numbers, possibly coming in for shelter from stormy seas in the outer coasts. Dolphin frequenting the Grove Arm include the common bottlenose (check name) and the threatened Hector’s dolphin. Orca sometimes use the Grove Arm likely foraging for rays.
